Upon closer inspection there is always more, so I got a magnifying glass eight inches in diameter. With my smallest brush trimmed down to only a few bristles, I peered through the looking glass to find a very different world where three tonal values are all that I have in my toolbox. Without leading you down a manufactured path of profundity, I simply ask that you look more closely at a piece of art than ever before. As I do when I paint, I hope you will lose yourself in a single brush stroke. These shapes don’t merely take us from one place to the next, but stand on their own as characters in a play. They have emotions, ulterior motives, even past lives in previous work where they auditioned for the paintings in this show. The role of casting director is often all I’m charged with in this process. When the curtain rises, it’s anyone’s guess, and we all ride that wave together.
